Bucketlist #94

April 08, 2020 0 Comments

I absolutely love visiting historical sites and buildings. There's a different feeling when visiting a place that has withstood the test of time. Cities like Silay, Naga, and Cebu are just bursting with great old structures and history. I can walk around them for hours, just looking at all the wonderful sights.
For me, historical visits not only improve our knowledge, but it also gives us a new story and a new lesson for life. By visiting these places we can know more about the history and culture of that particular place at a particular time period. We can learn how things were at that time, how people living in the old lifestyle survived. It’s like being taken back to an era. A time capsule. These historical places or heritage sites give people a glimpse of the past, allowing future generations to see actual examples of life before.
Sure, I visit other attractions too, but I'd often include heritage locations. When I travel, I usually plan my trips around seeing historic lighthouses, graveyards, churches, museums, and buildings. It excites me knowing that I’d be able to see historic locations up close and experience what I’ve read about.

For a person who is always curious about learning new things, it is no surprise that I’m one of those annoying people that wants to stop and read every sign and plaque. I remember the first time I encountered an interesting plaque. Years ago, my cousin Katrina visited us here in Bacolod. We showed her around the city, and at one point, she decided she’d like to drop by San Sebastian Cathedral. We took photos, and I noticed this old plaque hanging on one of the church’s columns. It was installed by the National Historic Commission of the Philippines, an agency I’ve never heard of before. I just thought it was great when they put the date on the old houses and put up signs explaining the history of buildings or places.
Once we got home, I got even more curious. I read more about NHCP and historical markers. Historical Markers are installed by NHCP in places that signifies important events, persons, structures, and institutions in Philippine national or local histories. I’ve read that there were some installed abroad; in Guam, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Hawaii, and wherever my boy Pepe wandered. The plaques usually hang outside building exteriors, near statues, and even in special locations.  They usually contain information and dates about the place or the monument. From then, it has been like a personal treasure hunt to set foot in each.

Over time, I did visit a few and took photos and that was it. No sharing in social media, no blogging, no photo printing, nothing. Just a good old memory but on the sad part of the coin, I also lost some of those photos since memory cards before where not really that reliable.

Related: The Bucket List

Which is why bucket list # 94 is dedicated to this. I'd like to visit at least 50 historical markers (only those with markers, because there are heritage sites that still doesn't have an issued plaque) and write about it. I'd probably go for more since in Negros alone there's already a lot of it, and just continue updating this one like an online directory. My, I'm excited to fill it in! In the meantime, here's my top 50.
